The Diocese of Fond du Lac’s Episcopal Safety Program (ESP)

A diocesan risk management program designed to help protect the Episcopal Church and the people it serves. This program is approved and recommended by the Trustees of the Diocese of Fond du Lac.

What Are The ESP Goals?

Church Insurance Company supports the ESP program financially, by providing resources and support, and by training the Diocesan Safety Manager.

How Does It Work ?

The Diocesan Safety Manager (DSM) , Mr. Rich Wilson, has been trained by Church Insurance Company and is given on-going support by our Church Insurance Company regional Vice President.

The DSM performs a walkthrough of your church building(s) and completes a 90 question survey which is sent to the Church Insurance Company along with any questions you may have raised about the survey.

While the DSM may make minor suggestions during the visit, it is the Church Insurance Company regional Vice President who prepares the report for the congregation and diocese from the completed survey. The regional Vice President is already familiar with most, if not all of the church buildings in the Diocese of Fond du Lac.

The DSM is an employee of the Diocese, not of the Church Insurance Company, so any questions regarding coverage will be forwarded to a Church Insurance representative. This service is a part of your coverage already in force, so there is no additional cost to the congregation.

What Common Risks are Considered ?

  • Fire
  • Electrical systems
  • Chemicals / flammables
  • Security
  • Structural defects
  • Stairways / handrails
  • Walking surfaces
  • Kitchens
  • Heating and AC
  • Outside groups

  • Disaster recovery

What Action Might A Congregation Take After Receiving The Report ?

In most instances recommendations focus on simple and basic changes to improve or enhance safety, such as moving fire extinguishers, securing a handrail, removing loose carpeting, covering electric outlets in areas with children, or the like.

Church Insurance will work with the congregation and the diocese to prepare a realistic and sensible timeframe for any corrective safety measures that might be needed. It is in everyone’s best interest to maintain a facility that is safe for all to use. ESP is about improving safety.
